They have their own unique features and preparation techniques that allow you to fully reveal the aroma and taste of coffee.

Espresso

Espresso is the “king” of coffee drinks and a symbol of Italian coffee culture. It appeared in Italy at the beginning of the 20th century, when the first coffee machine was created.

Espresso is made by forcing hot water (around 90°C) under high pressure through finely ground coffee beans. The result is a concentrated and aromatic drink with a thick, golden foam known as crema. Espresso can be enjoyed neat or used as a base for other drinks.

To prepare one serving, you will need 18–20 g of freshly roasted coffee beans and 30 ml of water. Choose elite coffee beans that suit your taste preferences and grind to a medium grind.

The proportions of ingredients may vary depending on the type of coffee machine and taste preferences. Some people like strong espresso and increase the amount of coffee to 22 g. Others prefer weaker ones and add 16 g of coffee. The amount of water can also be adjusted: take 20-25 ml for strong or 40-50 ml for less concentrated coffee.

Espresso is usually served in a small cup or glass known as a demitasse. This is a specially designed glass that holds 60–90 ml. Sugar can be added to the drink to soften the bitterness.

Cappuccino

Cappuccino is a classic coffee drink consisting of espresso, hot milk and milk foam. It got its name due to its resemblance to the clothes of the Capuchins.

Cappuccino has a softer taste than espresso due to the addition of milk. Coffee is an ideal companion for morning breakfasts, which is why it has become one of the most popular drinks in the world.

To prepare a portion of cappuccino, you will need:

•         one serving of espresso – 30 ml;

•         milk – 150 ml.

Prepare the espresso. Then froth the milk and pour it carefully into the cup of coffee, gradually increasing the speed and raising the height of the pour to create the characteristic cap of milk foam on the surface of the drink.

Cappuccino is usually poured into a special cup or glass with a capacity of 150-180 ml, which has a wide top and a narrow bottom. This shape allows you to preserve the milk foam.

Some people prefer to add a small amount of cocoa powder or cinnamon to the top of their cappuccino for decoration and extra flavor.

Latte

Latte, or as it is fully known in Italy “caffè latte”, meaning “coffee with milk”, is another popular coffee drink that consists of one part espresso and two parts milk with a little foam on top.

It differs from cappuccino in that it contains more milk and has a softer, creamier taste. The drink is often decorated with latte art – images and patterns created on the surface by milk foam.

For one serving of latte you need:

•         espresso – 30 ml;

•         milk – 150 ml.

The processes for making latte and cappuccino are similar. The only difference is that the former leaves less foam on the surface.
